What To Expect From Liposuction

Liposuction, also called “lipoplasty“ or “suction lipectomy,“ provides a way to remove fat cells from problem areas such as:

• Thighs

• arms

• abdomen

• chin

• cheeks

However, liposuction procedures are more about body contouring than about losing weight.

Some facts about fat

Once you’re an adult, the number of fat cells in your body stays relatively constant. When you add fat, your fat cells expand, and when you burn fat, they shrink. When fat cells are resistant to diet and exercise, removing the cells may be a way to combat the battle of the bulge. That’s the principle behind liposuction.

How liposuction works

Liposuction involves vacuum suctioning fat cells out of the body with a slender, hollow tube or “cannula.” The cannula’s inserted through a small incision (about a quarter of an inch), typically under local anesthesia.

Types of liposuction

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that takes from about 45 minutes to a couple of hours. The amount of time can vary with the type of procedure performed and your circumstances.

• In standard liposuction, a small amount of fluid is injected into the incision site to loosen fat cells.

• In tumescent liposuction, a larger amount of fluid is injected to make more space for the cannula to maneuver and to reduce bruising. The superwet technique is similar but uses a smaller amount of fluid.

• In ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), fat cells are broken apart with ultrasound before suctioning. An initial incision is still required to insert the cannula.

Recovering from Liposuction

As with any medical procedure, liposuction carries some risks. You should not have liposuction if you have diabetes, lung, heart, or liver disease, or if you are on medications that affect wound healing. You should have a thorough physical examination before undergoing liposuction.

What you can expect during recovery:

• There can be swelling and bruising.

• There may be some discomfort. Recovery time can vary from 3 days to a couple of weeks—everyone is different.

• You may have to wear a compression garment (like a girdle) for several weeks to decrease swelling and bruising.

• It can take up to six months to fully appreciate the results of a liposuction procedure.

What liposuction isn’t:

• Liposuction is not a miracle cure for obesity. A well-balanced diet and exercise are still required to maintain a desired weight, since fat cells that aren’t removed can still enlarge and cause bulges.

• Liposuction isn’t a way to get rid of cellulite or stretch marks.

• Liposuction isn’t free. Under most circumstances, liposuction is not covered by health insurance.

So although liposuction can improve body shape by removing fat bulges, it’s important to have reasonable expectations.

Picking the right plastic surgeon

It’s best to choose a physician who’s had experience with this type of cosmetic surgery. Look for a surgeon who belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). A good plastic surgeon will be open to all your questions and will explain the risks associated with the procedure. Importantly, a good plastic surgeon will consider what type of procedure is best for you as an individual.

5 Mindsets To Change Your Habits From Bad To Good To Lose Weight

Do you feel like you need to lose weight, but for some reason can’t make yourself to do it? Do you feel scared that you might now lose the weight once you start? Is it hard for you to give up those habits you’ve been holding on to for so long?

Well, you can change your habits, from bad to good, if you’re looking to lose weight. Yes, you have to believe that it can be done. First, you need to have a focused mindset in order to make this change happen.

Here are five mindsets you can implement in order to change your habits:

1. Your mind is a part of you. So when you make a decision, it affects you. In addition to that, the decisions you make can also affect others. Just be mindful of the decisions you make.

2. If you’re implementing a weight loss system for long-term, permanent weight loss, you must put your mind to not allowing any barriers (physical and mental) that will prevent you from moving forward. Some examples include, watching television and eating what you want. These are barriers that can prevent you from losing the weight effectively, if at all.

3. Fill your mind with good things. Think and act positive. Know that eventually the weight will come off, even though it may not look like it yet. Those that continue to make negative statements, you will either have to distance yourself from them or cut them out altogether. This will help you focus your mindset on changing your habits to learn new ones.

4. Join a support group that deals with weight loss. There are many support groups available that can help keep you on your toes as far as weight loss is concerned. You want to be around people that will help you keep focused and committed to the task at hand. Don’t get involved with anyone or any group that does just the opposite.

5. Take it one day at a time. There’s no need to rush like you would if you were doing a fad diet. Besides, these diets do nothing but help you put the weight back on after you’ve lost it. They’re only used for a certain period of time and then that’s the end of it. Create a plan where you can lose the weight effectively and not being rushed to do so.

All of these mindsets take willingness and willpower to do them. You must keep your focus and discipline yourself to get to the place you need to be

Emotional Eating Could Be Keeping You Fat

Growing up I was always overweight, or fat, yes the big f word. Then during my college years, I decided it’s time to lose the weight. So I set out on mission to get skinny or die trying, off on my way I was. I was able to drop half of my extra pounds. But no matter what I did I just couldn’t drop those last 15 pounds. I would drop 5 of those pounds and gain them right back. This went on for 3 years.

Of course this was very frustrating, maybe you are even in the same boat and know exactly what I’m talking about. After doing lots of research, I found out I’m an emotional eater. I often ate to cope with tough and negative emotions such as stress, fear, sadness, anger, or boredom.

Emotional eating is where the term comfort food comes from. You know when you are having a stressful day and at night eat your favorite comfort food. Maybe it’s ice-cream, pizza, cookies, potator chips, or some other junk food. Either way often when we are stressed out we crave those comfort foods and end up engating in emotional eating.

Are you wondering if your an emotional eater? To find out you need to think of instances where you overate, or ate more than you normally would. Did a certain emotion cause that? Maybe something stressful happened prior to your overeating episode? Read about emotional eating triggers for some more insight.

So how do you stop emotional eating? Well the first step is increasing your awareness of why you eat. As you are reaching out for food ask yourself if you are physically hungry. If you are then go ahead and eat. If you are not physically hungry, then try to figure out why you are reaching for the food. Maybe you are just used to eating at this time everyday. Maybe you are bored and you are about to eat for entertainment. Maybe you just had a stressful day and are trying to comfort yourself. Just be aware of why you are reaching for food. Don’t judge the reason, go easy on yourself.

The more awareness you have around food, the more you’ll be able to spot emotional eating. Once you spot your emotional eating you will find that there are certain emotions, events, or circumstances in your life that’s causing it. You need to come up with action steps to take care of those events and circumstances, preferably eliminate them if possible.

Let’s say you are finding out that you are always stressed at the end of your work day. Then maybe you need to talk to your manager about making some changes at work. And if that doesn’t work, maybe you should consider slowly transitioning to a new job.

Getting over your emotional eating takes time, and is a gradual process. However it will help you build healthier eating habits and finally drop and keep off those extra pounds
